"A holistic approach to health considers not just the physical body but also the emotional, mental, and social aspects of our lives." - Dr. Andrew Weil
Maybe She’s Born With it, Maybe IT’S MOLD!
Have you ever had a moment where you thought to yourself: “If I knew then what I know now, maybe I would have had a different result?” Of course you have! We all have those moments, and we can all learn from those moments and do our best to educate others.
Every once in a while, I’ll have clients reach out to me to share their personal testimonies, experiences, and epiphanies. Recently, I was speaking with a client of mine after she went through my course. Through enough back and forth, we started discussing mold toxicity. She told me that when she was in high school, her bedroom was on the third floor. It was actually an attic that was converted into a functional living space. One day, she opened the attic door, looking for something in storage. When she opened the door, the back of the door was covered in black mold.
They eventually had someone come and treat that area. During her time in that home, her school administration consistently chose her for “random” drug testing at school because she would frequently doze off in class. She suffered from chronic fatigue, and her teachers would even make light of the situation by joking about her school attendance. People were assuming her behavior was just teenage shenanigans, but was there more to the story?
My client shared with me that those moments never left her. When she looks back on that moment in her life, knowing what she knows now, she wonders if she was struggling with the burdens of having hidden mold in her home.
I wanted to share this story to encourage any parents that may find their way to this post to be a little extra. Teenagers have their moments. They play hooky; they do all the aggravating things to push buttons. It's easy to assume that teenagers may be full of it, but in my field of work, I have often found that sometimes even their behavior is linked to a hidden environmental issue.
Maybe they’re born to be wild, maybe there’s something in the air. With the amount of research available to us, we have the tools we need to be more knowledgeable and actionable. No generation is perfect, but as we grow in our understanding of getting to the root of our problems, we can help a younger generation to avoid chronic disease. We can work to defund p. . h. . a. . r. . .m. . .a. Had to do it.
Modern medicine has its place. Nevertheless, I wonder how many young adults and even their family members are suffering from chronic ailments, and haven’t had their doctors ask about environmental factors? How many of us are content to walk around with bandages instead of properly tending to an open wound?
What is Mold?
Molds represent a commonly found form of fungi present throughout our surroundings. They consist of filaments that develop into structures known as hyphae. As a defense mechanism, these hyphae release tiny particles called mycotoxins, which are responsible for initiating immune system responses and potentially leading to various human diseases. A single mold species can emit various mycotoxins, each with its own unique potential to harm different organs within the human body. Consequently, mycotoxin-related illnesses can manifest a diverse array of symptoms, making their identification difficult [1].
Mold toxicity, resulting from prolonged exposure to mold spores, can wreak havoc on our bodies. From respiratory issues and chronic fatigue to headaches and skin problems, the symptoms can be distressing, and hard to pinpoint. The effects of mold toxicity can extend beyond physical health, impacting our mental and emotional well-being as well.
Some of the Symptoms associated with Mold Toxicity Include:
Extreme Fatigue
Muscle Weakness and Muscle Cramps
Headaches
Light Sensitivity
Blurred Vision
Sinus Problems
Respiratory Issues, including shortness of breath, coughing, asthma.
GI problems such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and appetite swings.
Joint Pain
Cognitive issues including: memory Issues, focus/concentration issues, confusion, disorientation
Skin Sensitivity
Mood Swings
Temperature Regulation or Dysregulation Problems
Excessive Thirst
Increased Urination
Numbness
Tingling
Vertigo
Metallic Taste
Tremors
Is your Environment a Risk Factor?
Mold thrives under specific conditions. Understanding these conditions is crucial for preventing mold-related issues in your home.
Mold prefers environments with high humidity levels, typically around 60 percent or higher. Excess moisture provides the ideal breeding ground for mold spores to flourish. In addition to moisture, molds need organic materials to feed on. Prime targets for mold include wood, paper, and drywall. Other areas subjects to mold growth are windows, air vents, and near the plumbing underneath your sink.
According to research, nearly 50 percent of homes in the United States have been affected by mold growth of some kind. To safeguard your home from mold infestations, it's essential to control humidity levels, promptly address water leaks, and ensure proper ventilation. By creating an environment less favorable to mold growth, you can help protect your family's health and the integrity of your home.
Residing in an environment contaminated with mold carries inherent risks due to mold's production of allergens, irritants, and mycotoxins. Swiftly addressing any mold problems within your household is essential to mitigate potential health hazards.
What Can I Do If I Suspect Mold Exposure?
My number one piece of advice is that you call someone who can professionally find the mold in your home. There are a lot of locally based companies that know how to detect mold, and have the resources necessary for pinpointing the issue. It's always better to be safe than sorry, and I would take it a step further and suggest routine checks, especially if you live in humid climates like I do!
In the meantime, there are also efforts that you can make DAILY to ensure proper detoxification of potential exposure! I have created a slide below that you can reference for support!
It's crucial to recognize that mold-related health issues may go unnoticed or misdiagnosed, leading to prolonged suffering. If you or someone you know is experiencing unexplained symptoms that align with those mentioned earlier, seeking professional guidance is paramount. Early detection and intervention can make a significant difference in addressing mold toxicity and restoring health.
We should remain vigilant about our living environments, educate ourselves on the potential risks of mold toxicity, and take proactive steps to protect the well-being of ourselves and the younger generation. Mold may remain hidden, but with knowledge and action, we can uncover and mitigate its effects on our health and homes.
If you've been experiencing unexplained symptoms or suspect that mold might be playing a role, I want you to know that you're not alone. Many people suffer silently, unaware of the underlying cause. If any of the symptoms resonate with you or you'd like to learn more about mold toxicity, I encourage you to schedule a call so that we can discuss any underlying issues you may be battling. Remember, early detection and proper guidance are vital in addressing mold toxicity and reclaiming your health.
